lifting heavy things

Remember that time when you thought life was so heavy that it was going to break you?  That time when relationships were strained.  When money was scarce. When you felt all alone.  When your stability at work was in peril. When that health scare threatened to change your life forever.  Remember?

Now, remember that you are here right now reading this. What does that tell you?  Maybe a lot more than we can unpack in a few minutes. One thing I know it tells me is that you were built for lifting heavy things in this life. If you weren’t, you couldn’t remember those times because they would have crushed you. At minimum, you still exist my friend.

Fact is: You are built to lift and carry heavy things.

How might we foster an even greater capacity to lift the heavier things in life?  The answer may lie in behaving our way into a new way of feeling, thinking, and believing.  Longevity studies have shown that heavy resistance training (lifting heavy weights for simplicities sake) can lead to a decrease in all cause mortality (death from anything) over the course of our lives from 15-40%.  Lifting heavy things physically, consistently, each week has a tangible impact on how long you will live and the quality of that life span.  We call that ‘health span’.

The activity of heavy resistance training on health span is even greater when combined with high-intensity interval training (HIIT). We accomplish this through CrossFit at our facility.  The benefits this ‘drug’ of heavy resistance training and HIIT have a few side effects that you should be aware of before starting a protocol:

  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Increased muscle mass and strength
  • Enhanced bone density
  • Improved body composition (looks 😊)
  • Better metabolic health
  • Decrease in depressive episodes
  • Increase in self-confidence

Imagine if I packaged all the above into a pill you took every morning.  What would that be worth to you?

Until that miracle arrives, it is up to you to decide how you will partition your day to include these protocols.  You don’t need to join a gym to reap the benefits of heavy resistance training and HIIT or CrossFit.  However, the added emotional, psychological, and motivational benefits of working within a community with a coach are undeniable when it comes to consistency and adherence to the training protocols.

You are built to lift heavy things. In relationships, at work, and in life. Make time to build up your resilience and self-confidence through lifting heavy things in the gym to amplify the amazing human being you already have proven to be.

Don’t you think you’re amazing?  Just remember all that you have already survived and overcome in life.
